CENTER COMPLAINTS & GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE
Policy Statement & Purpose
This Training Center is dedicated to delivering the highest standards of maritime tuition, safety, and customer service. We recognize that students have a right to raise a formal complaint if they feel our courses, facilities, vessels, or staff conduct have fallen short of RYA standards. This procedure ensures that all complaints are handled fairly, transparently, confidentially, and resolved as quickly as possible.
Step 1: Informal Local Resolution (Afloat)
Many grievances stem from misunderstandings or immediate onboard issues (e.g., catering, cabin allocations, or pacing of tuition). Immediate Action: The student is encouraged to raise the issue directly with their practical Instructor while onboard, if comfortable doing so. Instructor Duty: The Instructor must listen calmly, take the feedback seriously, and attempt to resolve the issue immediately within the boundaries of safety and the course syllabus. Escalation: If the issue cannot be resolved onboard, or if the complaint directly concerns the Instructor’s behavior, the student should bypass this step and contact the shore office immediately.
Step 2: Formal Written Complaint (The Shore Base)
If an informal resolution is not achieved or is inappropriate, the student may lodge a formal written complaint. Submission: The complaint must be sent via email directly to the Center Principal crew@syinspiration.com within 14 days of the course completion date. Required Details: To process the grievance effectively, the written submission must include:
- The student’s full name and contact information. *
- The course dates, vessel name, and the name of the assigned Instructor.
- A clear, factual description of the incident, behavior, or operational failure. • Any supporting evidence (e.g., photos, logbook entries, or names of witnesses).
Step 3: Investigation & Principal’s Response
Upon receiving a formal written complaint, the Center Principal will execute the following administrative timeline:
Acknowledgment: The Principal will send a written acknowledgment of receipt to the student within 3 business days. T
he Investigation: The Principal will independently review the case. This includes interviewing the practical Instructor, reviewing ship logs, auditing maintenance files, and, if necessary, speaking confidentially with other students from the same course block.
Formal Resolution: The Principal will issue a definitive written response to the complainant within 14 business days of receiving the initial email. This response will outline the findings of the investigation and any corrective actions taken (e.g., staff training, refunds, or technical repairs).
Step 4: Escalation to the RYA
The decision of the Center Principal is final regarding local center operations. However, if the complainant believes that the center has breached the core RYA Conditions of Recognition, or if the local resolution remains profoundly unsatisfactory, the student has the right to escalate the matter directly to the governing body who can arbitrate between the two parties.
Contacting the RYA: The student can submit a formal grievance directly to RYA Training at RYA House.
Address: RYA Training, RYA House, Ensign Way, Hamble, Southampton, SO31 4YA, United Kingdom. Email: training@rya.org.uk
Center Cooperation: The Center Principal guarantees to provide full transparency, including sharing all internal investigation logs, student audit sheets, and instructor statements, should the RYA initiate an external review of the incident.
Governing Law
These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of Croatia. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Croatia.
